Unit 3: Systems in Action

Researchers have been looking at the concept of soil quality for decades now, and USDA NRCS has compiled some of the most relevant assessments into a Soil Quality Test Kit. The goal of this kit is to help producers and Extension personnel identify the types of evaluation that are most feasible, low cost, and useful for making decisions. The Soil Quality Test Kit consists of 11 soil tests that can be conducted by farmers and ranchers. A Soil Quality Test Kit Guide includes data recording sheets, provides information on how to interpret results of each test and describes how to build your own kit, or where to purchase them.

In addition, a number of states have developed Soil Quality (or Soil Health) Cards as another field tool to assess the current status of soil quality. When used over time, the Soil Health Card can be used to determine changes in soil quality that are affected by field management.
A Soil Quality Card displays farmer-selected soil quality indicators and associated descriptive terms. The indicators are based on farmers' practical experience and knowledge of local natural resources. Typically, the card lists soil quality indicators that can be assessed without the aid of technical or laboratory equipment. For more information, visit: Soil Health Cards
