Unit 1: Planning and Business Development
Within farm and ranch businesses, advisory groups or planning teams have proven to be a very powerful planning and management tool. Why? Partnerships and collaboration enrich brainstorming, lead to greater problem solving, and provide the cross-disciplinary technical support that is needed to answer tough questions that come from farming and marketing with a whole systems approach. Recall the ranch advisory board organized by Agee Smith of Cottonwood Ranch in Wells, Nevada (from Course 1). Smith assembled a planning team that included the Bureau of Land Management, Cooperative Extension, Natural Resources Conservation Service, his local county board, other ranchers and several nearby residents. The 20-member ranch advisory board meets three times each year to advise and help Smith make management decisions for his 32,500-acre cattle ranch. Producer quote: “It really helps having that many minds with different perspectives working together.”
